Late Night with Seth Meyers

Update, 7/22 9:39 AM PST: The band performed "Pups to Dust". Watch the performance below.

It has been announced that Modest Mouse will be the musical guests on Late Night with Seth Meyers this coming Tuesday, July 21st. Adam Sandler and Margaret Cho are the other guests for that evening.

As with most TV performances, it's sometimes hard to know if this will be pre-recorded, but seeing as how the band is performing in Brooklyn the following day, there is a good chance the date is accurate. If you're going to be in NY, there might still be tickets available for the taping.

Lastly, we've been slack with updates in the last few weeks, and our email seems to have been stuck (for a while). All the latest set lists and tour dates are in now, and we'll be back to regular posting as the tour continues. I'll also start making my way through a few months worth of emails.

Board problems

So as you many have noticed, we've been having some data problems since Tuesday, which has resulted in me taking the Board down.

On Tuesday, during a routine server restart, the database server failed to shutdown correctly. Upon restart, certain databases somehow became corrupt, and the server automatically tried to find the last good backup it could work with, taking a lot of the Interstate-8 data back to May. It seems we've had a problem for a while, and we've been backing up corrupt data.

This issue also spread to numerous other sites I maintain, including the database that actually runs the server administration tool. IE client websites that I've set up since May went down, email accounts deleted, etc. Clients have had to come first in this matter.

The good news, is that we've managed to recover the main Interstate-8 database. The bad news, is that we haven't been able to do the same so far with the Board database. It's really frustrating, because we have a backup of the database from October 5th, but as I mentioned, we've been backing up corrupt data somehow, so the file is no use (moral of the story, test your backups...).

Right now, we're still testing old Board backups. Bear with us, as these backups take a while to restore (phpBB has a pretty large and complex table structure). to get an idea of how functional they are. So far it's looking like the last stable Board backup we have could be June 12th, which is not great, but better than nothing. Thankfully news has been awfully slow and posts have been few.

We don't want to have to keep the Board down any longer than we have to. I'm going to keep looking at backups, but if I'm not successful, I'll probably bring the board back online on Sunday, with whatever we have then. I know this is frustrating, and I'm especially sorry to anyone that may have registered in the last 3 months, as you're going to have to do it again unless I have any more success.

The years go fast and the days go so slow: Five years of Interstate-8.com

This past week, Interstate-8.com celebrated five years of being on the web. You can read about the origins of the site over on the about page, so I won't go in to any of those details. Instead, here's a brief look back at how the site has changed over the years.

The original idea for the site came from spfc.org. I recreated many of the elements and features they had, left out ones that I thought would be applicable (such as the Bootlist), and added some of my own. The design was roughly based (ie: blatantly copied) on Pearl Jam's website back in 2006, which I was particularly fond of at the time.

The colours were based obviously on the the main colour theme from the Good News For People Who Love Bad News album. To be honest, I can't remember ever thinking that the colours would change each time an album came out, but a week before We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank came out, I figured they would need to change. I was never mad about that colour scheme, yet it graced the site for just under three years.

In 2009, I looked into redoing the site and being a little more blog based. A big comment at that point had been people wanting to comment on articles, and mainly songs (like songmeanings.net). I've included the rough design of the homepage below. I had also wanted to recode the site in a different language. The language the site was originally coded in, is pretty much dead. I got around to coding about half the site, when 2009 started turning into a very busy year; I got engaged and subsequently married, and planning weddings and buying houses took precedence over redoing websites. The site then sat incomplete for ages, which was probably a good thing, social media took off in a big way, and I don't think many of the elements would have fit well in that design. That, and now looking back at it, I am not very fond of this design.

Late 2010, I came up with a new design (ie: blatantly copied from somewhere else), and tried to salvage as much code from the aborted 2009 project. Interstate-8.com was relaunched three days into the new year.

To mark this five year anniversary, we'd like to hear from you what features you feel are still missing. Themes were promised six months ago, and actually are technically done, I just need to get around to making the images and styles for each album and uploading them. I also built a site search, which just needs to be cleaned up and uploaded. But anything else you'd like to see, send us your ideas and suggestions. Mail us, comment on this post, comment on the Board, Facebook, Twitter... (Too many of these things now).

Some thank you's: Obviously the band, who if not for this project wouldn't exist. Pat Graham for all his help over the years. The small team of people that help keep the site running and moderating the Board. And lastly, I'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone that's visited and contributed over the years.

I'm on a road shaped like a figure eight: The new Interstate-8.com

Happy new year and welcome to the new Interstate-8.com. As you can see we have completely redesigned the site.

Firstly, to get the technical stuff out of the way, I recoded the site in PHP and converted the existing database to MySQL. I have also moved the site to a new web host, Media Temple, which I am extremely happy about seeing as how my old web host in the last year has been going down in flames.

Down to new features. Apart from a fresh new look and feel, which I don't think looks too bad considering I have ZERO design skills, I have added new features, most are small and insignificant, but will make the presentation and usefulness of the data we store better. Major changes include:

  • Commenting - This is request I have received a lot over the years. The ability to comment on songs like the site SongMeanings.net, etc. It's a really good idea, so I've added this feature through a plugin called disqus.com, which is becoming more and more popular. The new site has the ability to comment on news articles, songs, albums, tour dates (instant reviews!), pretty much everything.

  • Studio Sessions - This is a rough collection for now. We will need to go through and fine tune it, but basically it is an attempt to catalogue every time Modest Mouse entered a studio to record something, whether if be an album track, demo, etc. Sessions link back to the songs and people involved and visa versa.

  • Song Quotes - Any quotes the band has ever mentioned involving individual songs from interviews, etc; like either the song's meaning, effects used, etc. Although... Someone now just needs to find some...

  • Alternative lyrics and track names - Something that has been sorely missing and a limitation of the old site, is the ability to bind alternative song titles to songs and alternative lyrics (this includes live lyrics). No longer. I received many contributions earlier on for alternative lyrics from live performances, (eg the extended Trucker's Atlases, etc), but had no way of putting them into the system, this can now be done, so by all means if you have a bootleg of a show in which the lyrics to a track are severally changed and you think it should be noted, please submit.

  • Tour Recordings - just the info for now, I am not looking at hosting bootlegs. This feature will do is track which shows have been recorded, with what, the quality and if the recording is complete or not. The technology is there, it's just a work in progress and something you will start to see more of in the tour section.

  • Venues - Tour dates will now start tracking performances played at the same venue, not just city, state and country. With the hopes of expanding and having a decent library of venues around the world.

  • Themes - At the moment, this is the default theme for the site, but in the coming weeks we will be adding one for each album and maybe some EPs. It's nothing too major, mainly just the colours of the site, but it's a nice touch.

Right now, most of the original data is as is. We're going to be going through entries over the next few months and trying to fix up as much of the original data as possible (I found tons of mistakes while moving the data over; incorrectly spelt song names, album release dates, and a whole Japanese tour missing from 1999). The new system also allows us to expand on the already large discography section with far more ease. A lot of the entries will still have their old album art in, which is the incorrect size, so some may look a little stretched. This mainly applies to side projects though.

I've also got in temporary bios taken from Wikipedia, which we will go back and add to along the way, but feel free to add your two cents to them in their comments section. We also have plans for a new message board theme, a mobile site, maybe (big maybe) an iPhone app, and some other useful features a long the way.

So... here it is. I hope I haven't missed anything in testing. If you see something glaringly wrong, please bear with us, let us know and we will do our best to fix it as soon as possible.

Thanks for all your support over the last 4.5 years, and here's hoping we all get word of the new album soon.

The move has begun

We have begun the process of moving the site over to a new hosting company and have had to take the message board offline for the time being.

The main site will remain active until we have the new site set up and in working order, then we will be switching to new servers and the new version on Interstate-8.com at the same time, trying to keep the down time to a minimum.

I'm sure I'm the only one hoping that there is no explosion of Modest Mouse news during this process...

Site Back Up

Interstate-8.com is finally back up and running with the data restored. The message board is back up too. So what other news have we missed?

Update

Our website is still missing all of April's data. The site was moved to an upgraded system within the same hosting company on Monday morning without notification, and the database that was used is one from the end of March... doesn't really help matters.

Now there are problems restoring the database that was in use on April 25 when everything was still good. 60 minutes has turned into a few hours, which has now turned into 4 days, and I still have no definite answer as to when the problem is going to be solved. Apologies to all.

Server Upgrade

Please note that the site is being currently being moved to a new server and the database that they are using is an old one. Please be patient while we get our hosting company to restore the correct database. The message board will also be down until all data is current again.

Follow Us on Twitter

Interstate-8 can now be found on Twitter. I'm not entirely sure on how we can effectively use this feature, but I figure I can use it to post minor updates, rumours and give thanks to everyone that submits anything. Maybe it will also become a quicker way to get a reply out of me than email...

Message Board Upgrade

The Message Board has been upgraded to phpBB3. I'm sure you will notice they've made an incredible amount of changes.

Hopefully everything has been copied over correctly. For some reason the Avatars did not and all the files were renamed, so everyone has to upload theirs again I'm afraid. If you no longer have yours and want to still use it, please PM me and I will send it to you.

If anyone has any problems or comments, please let me know.

Slow updates

Sorry to everyone that has been submitting news and information over the past week or so. I've been swamped at work and have been spending what feels like every moment of my free time apartment hunting, which thankfully ended yesterday. Updates should return to normal.
